It is believed that the area of Kale Fortress, known as Skopje Fortress, was inhabited as early as the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, as evidenced by numerous archaeological findings. The fortress itself dates back to the reign of Emperor Justinian I (535 AD). Due to its strategic location and importance, it was frequently attacked and occupied by various conquerors throughout history. Following the fall of Samuel’s Empire in 1018, the city was later seized by the rebels of Peter Delyan. It was subsequently attacked by the Cumans, Scythians, Pechenegs, and others. Numerous archaeological remains have been discovered at the fortress. Today, Skopje Fortress (Kale) is one of Skopje’s most prominent landmarks, reflecting the city’s rich cultural heritage and serving as an important historical and tourist attraction.
